Lorraine Evelyn O'Hara Pittman, 98, a resident of Jacksonville for the past 39 years, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on September 4, 2018. She is preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband of 53 years, Melvin A. Pittman, and her son William P. Pittman. She is survived by her son Melvin P. Pittman and his wife Celinda of Peachtree Corners, GA.; her daughter Joyce Pittman Hodge and her husband Charley of Jacksonville; her grandson Doug Hodge and his wife Esther; her great-grandchildren Hannah Johnson, Ben Hodge and his wife Kaleigh, and Spencer Hodge, all of Jacksonville.
She was born on January 23, 1920 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the only child of Philip M. O'Hara and Jeanie Henderson. She lived in Belmont, graduating from Belmont High School and the 3-year program at Cambridge City Hospital School of Nursing. She joined the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps during WWII and was assigned to the U.S. Naval Academy Hospital. It was there that she met her husband, Lt. Commander Pittman.
Dr. and Mrs. Pittman moved to Virginia where Lorraine supported her husband's career as a physicist and dean of science and was active in the women's club and faculty wives club. She was an accomplished pianist, music was a life-long gift for her right up to the end. Mel and Lorraine enjoyed world travel. She was a member of the Mandarin Baptist Church and a devoted wife and mother, supporting her children in their many activities.
