How does one summarize 99 years of purposeful living?
Naomi Pearl Windham Watson stepped into the presence of Jesus on Saturday, March 13, 2021, following a brief final illness and surrounded by the love and presence of family. Naomi was born on the family farm located east of Dublin, Georgia, November 18, 1921, to Victor Ivan Windham Sr. and Naomi Pearl Harden. Her early years on the farm is where she developed her tireless work ethic. When time allowed, she was involved in sports and played on the girls basketball team prior to graduating first in her class from Lowery High School in 1938.
As a young woman, Naomi worked as a welder on the construction of Liberty ships in the Savannah Shipyards during World War II. Naomi settled in Jacksonville, Florida, where she married Samuel (Sam) L. Watson, Jr. The focus of her life shifted completely. Her family of her husband and eventually 9 children consumed every moment of each day. After the death of Sam in 1968, Naomi faithfully raised her still young family in the "nurture and admonition of the Lord" and trusted God to supply every need. She worked nights to provide for her family and slept during school hours so that her children always saw her alert, available and constantly working. Her faith in God and strength of will sustained her and created a balanced and ordered home. She exemplified a life of faith and endeavor throughout the remainder of her long life and became a beacon of light and example to all who knew her.
Naomi is preceded in death by her parents and siblings, her father and mother-in-law, her husband Sam Watson Jr., son-in-law Nick Dyer and son and daughter-in-law Sam and Beckie Watson.
Survivors include her children Marie Dyer, Suzanne Teel (Gerald), Trish Oldham (Steve), Randy Watson, Donna Gill (Mike), Richard Watson, Dawn Roehl (Don) and Gene Watson (Lurvin). Her ever-increasing family of survivors also include well over 100 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Known as "Granny" to so many, you will be greatly missed. Your long earthly journey is complete and your race well run. Your true and unfettered life has now begun as you rejoice in the presence of the Lord, His holy angels and your loved ones in Christ who preceded you through the valley of the shadow of death into God's glorious kingdom. We will see you soon. Even so come quickly, Lord Jesus.
