On Dec. 1, 2020 the world lost a magnificent southern lady, Bonnie Nelson Gum went on to her heavenly rewards in the same fashion she had lived her long life- with poise and grace. Born in Italia FL, now a ghost town, on Sept. 12, 1915. She grew up near Kingsland, GA. with her brother and three sisters. Upon Graduation from high School in 1932, she moved to Jacksonville and never left.
She married Charlie Gum in 1940 and they adopted a baby boy, David, in 1953. Bonnie was a member of Southside Baptist Church for seventy years and was the last survivor of her beloved Sunday school class. Known by all who met her as a sweet, unassuming lady- always ready to help anyone. She never lost her wonderful sense of humor.
Bonnie was predeceased by her parents Luke and Nellie Nelson, sisters Thelma and Lucille, brother L.D. Nelson and her husband Charlie. She is survived by her son David and daughter-in-law Rosa Leigh, granddaughter Sarah Alanah Leigh Eckonen and great grandson Zeke Eckonen - both of Hendersonville, NC, sister Betty Bush of Kingsland, neice Bonnie Easterling of Richmond VA and her beloved "handsome cat" Stewie.
Her memory will be cherished by all the people she touched over the years. In lieu of flowers, her family requests donations to Community Hospice.
