Caroline Alden Smith Yates of Jacksonville, Florida, died on Wednesday, January 8, 2020, after an illness, at the age of 70. Caroline was born on September 19, 1949, in Providence, Rhode Island, and lived there throughout her childhood, later relocating to Nashville, Tennessee, with her family. She graduated from Hillsboro High School in Nashville, Tennessee, and graduated from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, with a degree in Advertising. To be closer to her parents, she moved to Jacksonville, Florida, in the eighties to begin a career in Administration, and to be near the beach she so loved.
Caroline married Donald Ellis Yates in her parent's living room in Jacksonville. They had one daughter, Casey Alden Yates.
She was predeceased by her parents, Kenneth & Carol Smith, and ex-husband, Don Yates.
In addition to her daughter, she is survived by her brothers, Peter Smith (Lucy), Steven Smith (Nancy), her niece, Allison Tolksdorf (Oliver), and nephews Pete Smith (Karen), Ted Smith (Jen), Ben Smith (Michelle) and also by several cousins and family in Connecticut.

Caroline had a deep love of horses, the beach, and the color red. She truly believed in the goodness of people. She was a true hippie, having participated in a local Woodstock in the seventies, but most of all, she believed in treating everyone with kindness and respect.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 29, 2020, at 11 am, at St. Paul's by the Sea Episcopal Church, 465 11th Ave N, Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250, with a reception to follow.
