Nana's obituary

Catherine Fryer Cline Catherine Fryer was born on October 21, 1941, in Brownsville, Tennessee and passed away on February 17, 2024 in Fernandina Beach, Florida.

She was the daughter of Catherine Chapman Fryer and George Landreth Fryer. As an Army brat she moved all over the south, from Paris, Tn., Aiken, SC, Mobile Al., and Cartersville Ga, before settling in Jacksonville, Florida in 1953. She attended public schools including John Gorrie Jr High, Landon Middle School and graduating from Englewood, class of 1959. (The school's 2nd graduating class). She attended The University of Florida until her grandmother got sick and she came home to care for her and never returned to college.

She once applied for a sales job at May Cohen's in downtown Jacksonville. The interviewer said she didn't have enough experience. She had none! She told him, "Tell me where to go to get this experience, and in a year I will be back with a years experience ". She was hired on the spot! She also worked clerical positions and taught preschool. When she became a single mother, she couldn't see how to have a job and handle day care for her children, so she opened her own. For 22 years, (1973-1995), she had a licensed home day care, inspected by the state with a stellar record. (In both homes, Arlington and Riverside.) While running an excellent day care with a full register of five babies, she also was a foster mother, having 36 children over a 5 year span, as an emergency care , (meaning less than 30 days.) except some stayed over a year.

She never missed a beat. She restored her home in Riverside, back to the beauty it was in 1905, with a few modern benefits. She hung wall paper for friends as well as herself. She was a wonderful seamstress and made many costumes and clothes for her children and grandchildren. Many, her granddaughter would design and Nana would make them. Beautiful pieces and usually, a doll or bear had one to match. Her talented handy work has been saved for and cherished by the younger grands.

In her 20s, 30s and 40s, Catherine sang with The Beaches Choral Society. She also enjoyed working in the local theaters around Jacksonville, performing, as well as handling costuming. In the early 80s, she was on the board of Riverside Avondale Preservation (RAP).

She began looking in to her family history in the 90s and her grandson enjoyed history as well. She took him to libraries and battle fields. That instilled his love for US history and he achieved both of his degrees because of her influence. As she kept "digging" into genealogy and traced her family back to England in the 800s!! Although one granddaughter grew up in Navarre and later, in Mississippi, she also served our country in The United States Army. Something "Nana" was extremely proud of, and never far from her heart. Her youngest grandbaby is "her baby". She climbed down on the floor to build blocks with her. She taught her colors and shapes as a game with flash cards and always a kiss good night. She loved to see her dance and always asked what she had learned at class.

Catherine was an active Girl Scout, then Girl Scout mom, Girl Scout Grandmother, Boy Scout Grandmother, T-Ball Nana, Football, cheerleading, dance and so much more. She was always there for her grandchildren until she couldn't make it anymore. And no grandmother was more proud of her four. From Chorus concerts, football games or dance recitals.

When her health began to fail, she moved in with her daughter in 2006, and by then, they were all back in Paris, Tennessee. In 2009, Catherine, her daughter, and two grandchildren moved "home" to Jacksonville Florida. In 2011, when her daughter met Kevin Wright and married in 2013, she moved, with the family, to Fernandina Beach. Then in 2016, her oldest grandchild earned his Master's degree from Jacksonville University. One grandchild began her senior year of high school and "the baby" was born. Alexandria June completed our family in July.

Catherine was proceeded in death by both of her parents and a brother. She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca "Jill" Cline Wright, Son-In-Law, Kevin Wright, grandchildren, James Roland Thomas II, Natalie Elizabeth Parker Myers (Dylan), Mary Catherine "Mickey" Wright, Alexandria June Wright and one Great-grandson, Hunter Wallace Parker.

A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held at 11am on February 29th at Naugle Funeral Home at 1203 Hendricks Ave. Jacksonville, Florida.
