Danny E. Dillon passed away on May 19, 2017, surrounded by his family, following a lengthy illness at the age of 68. Mr. Dillon was born to Jacque Dillon and Pearl Mae Gordon in Moline, Illinois on April 14. He was a marine mechanic for the US Navy for 9 years, stationed on the USS Saratoga in Mayport, FL.
Following his honorable discharge from the navy in 1978, Mr. Dillon made a living as an independent diesel truck salesman, which earned him the nickname “Diesel Dan.” He also worked as a salesman on a variety of car lots in the Middleburg, Green Cove Springs, and Orange Park areas. He finally settled at City Automotive Isuzu as a salesman and finance manager for his good friend John Galeani, where “Diesel Dan” became a well-known name among car dealerships in Jacksonville.
Mr. Dillon is preceded in death by his mother and father, sister Cindy Woodard, and granddaughter Angela Burney. Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Penny Dillon; 2 siblings, Tony Dillon and his husband Gary, and Jacqueline Kelley and her husband Charlie; 2 daughters, Shelia Grant and her husband Erik, and Sonya Avery and her partner Kenneth; grandchildren, Eric Burney and his wife Jessica, Amanda Avery and her husband Jesse, Austin Avery and his partner Ashley, Marques Burney, and Hayden Grant; and 2 great-grandchildren, Hendry and Elijah.
Mr. Dillon was a hardworking man who loved his family. He enjoyed fishing and playing chess with his grandsons and gardening with his granddaughter. He liked to spend his lunch breaks and some evenings after work at the Golden Ox with good friends Craig Decker, Glenn Shinkle, Kenneth Frizzell, and others, where he would drink vodka tonics before going home to take care of his wife and their dog, TT.
Dan Dillon was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, who touched the lives of many and will be greatly missed. He passed away at 12:10pm, and by 12:15 was surely already up in Heaven with his arms around his family and a Busch beer in each hand, as he smiled down at us all.
