Donald Howard Duclose
September 28, 1943 — July 2, 2014
Donald Howard DuClose of Jacksonville, Florida passed away peacefully on July 2, 2014 at the age of 70 years. He was born in Oak Park, Illinois on September 28, 1943 to parents Donald Edward DuClose and Thelma Lillian Johnson DuClose. He spent his early years in Chicago, Illinois. Then, when his father worked for the railroad, the family spent 6 months of every year in Jacksonville, and Don divided each school year between schools in both Chicago and Jacksonville. In 1955 they moved to Jacksonville permanently.
He graduated from Alfred I. Dupont High School in 1961 and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Jacksonville University. He taught biology and chemistry at Andrew Jackson High School and the Marine Science Center in Mayport, and was Lab Manager at Florida Community College Jacksonville. He had a brief career as a professional photographer. At an early age he showed a passion and talent for photography, especially nature photography, and over his lifetime created a large collection of photographs. In 1991 he won the City of Jacksonville’s Earth Day Photo Competition. In recent years, he served on the boards of the Southern Genealogist’s Exchange Society and the First Coast Freethought Society.
In 1969, he married the love of his life, Elizabeth Markgraf DuClose. They have been residents in Jacksonville’s historic Riverside for 24 years. Friends and family will always remember Don for his intelligence, sharp sense of humor and a depth of knowledge about science, literature, philosophy and music, as well as for his kind and gentle nature.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Elizabeth DuClose; and cousins, Steve Larson of Chicago IL, James Larson of North Carolina, and Richard Larson of Chicago IL.
