Donald LaVerne Roberts, 77, died Sunday, November 13, 2016 following a brief illness.
He leaves his sister, Linda Marchu (Sam), daughter, Donna Powell (Darel), son, Timothy Roberts (Lisa) and daughter April Norse (Kevin) and six grandchildren: Xavier, Jared, Jason, Hannah, Zoe and Luke, as well as cherished extended family. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Sherydn (Sherry) Shirley Roberts, to whom he was married for 48 years, and grandson, Matthew.
Born in Cross City, Florida on July 27, 1939 and raised in Jacksonville, Don was the son of Donald O’Dell Roberts and Letha (Bailey) Roberts. He was a lifelong resident of Jacksonville, a member of Arlington Baptist Church, and a Scottish Rite Freemason. He was married to Sherry on October 20, 1961 at Central Baptist Church in Jacksonville. He proudly coached his children’s sports teams and was an involved leader in their civic organizations. Don grew beautiful fruit trees, and was handy with house and car projects. His crowning accomplishment was building a vacation home in Tuxedo, North Carolina, where he and Sherry enjoyed much of their retirement after he retired from a 30-year telecommunications career. Don and Sherry shared a passion for travel and enjoyed many cruises and trips abroad together. The legacy Don left his family includes commitment to Jesus Christ and his Church, unconditional love of family, delight in good food, and humble yet happy living.
Don’s family will receive family and friends at the Naugle Funeral Home (1203 Hendricks Ave) from 6:00-8:00pm Tuesday, November 22. A graveside service will be held at Arlington Memorial Park (6921 Lone Star Rd) at 11:00am on Wednesday, November 23. Don’s son, the Rev. Dr. Tim Roberts, will officiate.
