Edward William Cavin passed away peacefully on January 7, 2025 at the age of 92. Ed,

a native and lifelong Floridian, was born December 23, 1932 in Deland, Florida. As a

child, Ed's family moved to Jacksonville where he attended local schools and graduated

from Robert E. Lee Senior High School (Class of 1950). Ed was proud to have worked

at Huckins building yachts during his high school years. He was also an avid and skilled

water skier, earning many trophies at tournaments throughout Florida. After high school,

Ed joined the Navy before enrolling in the University of Florida where he met the love of

his life, Lynn Brodt. After graduation from UF with a degree in Civil Engineering, he and

Lynn moved back to Jacksonville and raised four children. Ed enjoyed a long career

with the Independent Life Insurance Company where he served as the Buildings

Manager overseeing the construction and maintenance of the company's buildings

throughout the country. After Ed retired from Independent Life, he continued his

engineering career as a private consultant for over 20 years.

Ed's scientific mind led him to many and varied interests and hobbies. He was an avid

orchid grower and member of the Jacksonville Orchid Society. He also traveled the

world to view many solar eclipses and to search for rare orchids and snails with his

friend, Harry Lee, in such varied places as Borneo, the Philippines, and South America.

Ed was a Certified Barbecue Judge as well, and spent many happy years judging

competitions throughout the South. He also found great happiness in listening to live

Dixieland jazz concerts.
