Cavin, Edward W. (December 23, 1932 -January 7, 2025)
Edward William Cavin passed away peacefully on January 7, 2025 at the age of 92. Ed,
a native and lifelong Floridian, was born December 23, 1932 in Deland, Florida. As a
child, Ed's family moved to Jacksonville where he attended local schools and graduated
from Robert E. Lee Senior High School (Class of 1950). Ed was proud to have worked
at Huckins building yachts during his high school years. He was also an avid and skilled
water skier, earning many trophies at tournaments throughout Florida. After high school,
Ed joined the Navy before enrolling in the University of Florida where he met the love of
his life, Lynn Brodt. After graduation from UF with a degree in Civil Engineering, he and
Lynn moved back to Jacksonville and raised four children. Ed enjoyed a long career
with the Independent Life Insurance Company where he served as the Buildings
Manager overseeing the construction and maintenance of the company's buildings
throughout the country. After Ed retired from Independent Life, he continued his
engineering career as a private consultant for over 20 years.
Ed's scientific mind led him to many and varied interests and hobbies. He was an avid
orchid grower and member of the Jacksonville Orchid Society. He also traveled the
world to view many solar eclipses and to search for rare orchids and snails with his
friend, Harry Lee, in such varied places as Borneo, the Philippines, and South America.
Ed was a Certified Barbecue Judge as well, and spent many happy years judging
competitions throughout the South. He also found great happiness in listening to live
Dixieland jazz concerts.
Ed is predeceased by his wife Lynn, son Scott and brother Tom. He is survived by his
children Eric (Margaret), Craig (Nadia), Ellyn, and his longtime companion Marilyn
Wood.
Ed's funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2025 at 11:00 am at St.
Mark's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made
to St. Mark's Episcopal Church.
