Elmira “Mimi” Quezergue, 85, passed away on March 2, 2016 in Jacksonville, Florida. She was born on March 18, 1930 in New Orleans, Louisiana to Thomas and Pauline [Johnson] Parker. She was the sister of Thomas, Jr. (deceased) (Anna), Marian (George), Geraldine (deceased), and Steven (Sandra).
Mimi grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana and lived there for almost 83 years. She graduated from McDonough 35 in 1947. Mimi was an unsung hero to our family and in the community. After completing business school, she worked at Louisiana Insurance Company and eventually moved on to become the first African American sales clerk (Mark Isaacs Department Store) on Canal Street. Thereafter, Mimi moved on to Krauss Department Store where she worked in management for many years until her retirement.
Mimi and Sidney Quezergue married in 1951 and were blessed to be happily married for over 50 years. To this union, two beautiful boys were born, Sidney, Jr. (“Poochie”) and Michael. God would continue to bless Mimi by expanding her family when she began to rear Poochie’s daughter Jennifer (Jenny) and to assist her in caring for her two sons (Donte’ and Dontre’—“the boys”). The Quezergue family enjoyed Mardi Gras, family gatherings, and participating in events centered around great traditional N’Awlin’s food.
Mimi credited her blessed life to her unwavering faith and prayer. She remained faithful to the tried and true biblical principle, “Remember to always put God first because where there is Christ, your foundation will always remain solid”.
Because of this foundation, Mimi unselfishly served as caretaker for both her ailing husband and her son Poochie. Truly characteristic of Mimi, she never complained and continued to be supportive of Jenny and the boys who affectionately referred to their “rock” as “GiGi”.
As time passed by and seasons began to change, Jenny willingly undertook the role as family caregiver and began to care for Mimi in her later years. Jenny, Ervin and the boys demonstrated kindness, love and loyalty in their tireless service. Their efforts were supported by relatives from near and far, all with one goal in mind – working together to enhance Mimi’s overall quality of life.
Mimi was preceded in death by her devoted husband and two adoring sons. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving granddaughter Jennifer (Ervin) Pond of Jacksonville, Florida; her brother Steven (Sandra) Parker of New Orleans, Louisiana; her sister Marian (George) Wayfer of El Cerrito, California; her great-grandchildren Donte and Dontre; her nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 18, 2016, at Corpus Christi- Epiphany Catholic Church, 2022 Saint Bernard Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana 70116. There will be a repast immediately following the memorial service located at Corpus Christi reception hall from 11-2pm.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Jennifer Quezergue-Pond, 10435 Marble Egret Court West, Jacksonville Fl, 32257.
