George D. Flynn, 92, of Jacksonville, passed away Labor Day, September 6, 2021, at Baptist Medical Center South. George was born in Brooklyn, New York on October 19, 1928 to John and Stella (Johnston) Flynn.
At age 17, George joined the U.S. Navy Reserve and served for two years. He then served in the U.S. Army as a baker in Korea. He met and married the love of his life, Theresa Abreu, on June 14, 1949, in Brooklyn, New York. Two week later, George returned to active duty in Korea as a staff photographer documenting various events of the war for two more years before returning home. George and Theresa's first son George was born on June 3, 1953 in Brooklyn, New York.
In 1956 while visiting family in Florida, they fell in love with Miami. A few weeks later George secured a midnight job as a freight baggage handler at the Miami International Airport and the Flynn's relocated to Miami to embark on a whole new life. In 1957, George and Theresa purchased their first family home for $9,000. On February 18, 1961, they welcomed their second son Donald.
George joined the RCA Television Company repair division in 1963 where for more than 16 years he made service calls for residential and commercial properties all over South Florida and the Florida Keys. Following that he took a position with a closed circuit movie distribution company serving hotels in Miami Beach. In 1979, George and Theresa left the warmth of South Florida and moved to Pennsylvania with Bar Vender company where George transitioned his expertise to in-room bar vending systems for hotels in the U.S. and Canada. Two years later George and Theresa followed Bar Vender when they moved it's headquarters outside Chicago, Illinois where they spent the next five years. In 1986 Holiday Inn Corporate became a customer of the in-room bar vending business and retained George as consultant to that portion of the companies interest moving him to their headquarters in Memphis Tennessee. Years later, George was offered a Chief Engineer position with a Holiday Inn property in New Orleans where he spent the last five years until his retirement at age 65. George and Theresa moved back to their beloved Florida in 1993 settling in Jacksonville as home base.
George and Theresa enjoyed being outdoors with their boys camping, fishing, swimming at the beach, often visiting the Everglades and Florida Keys. George volunteered for the Muscular Dystrophy Association for five years. He was active in the Boy Scouts with both of his sons. After George retired he and Theresa went to the Magic Kingdom a few times a month, logging over 100 trips together.
George is survived by his sons, George and Donald, daughter-in-law, Lynn, grandchildren, Alexandra and husband Mark Gedert, Charmaine, George Peter and William and great grandchildren Alita, Jasper and Trinity Gedert. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, John; sister, Harriett and his wife, Theresa Flynn.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2021, at Naugle Funeral Home Chapel, 1203 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville, Florida. We will begin receiving guests at 10:00 am and service will begin at 11:00 am. A private internment will be held Monday, September 27, 2021, at the Jacksonville National Cemetery.
