Herman A. Jones, the son of John and Auguste Jones, was born in Morrilton, Arkansas on December 28, 1921 and passed away in Jacksonville, Florida on February 8, 2024, at the age of 102. He grew up during the Great Depression on Petit Jean Mountain, Arkansas where he attended a one-room schoolhouse. When he turned 18, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and served for about a year before he enlisted into the United States Navy in August 1941. He became an Aviation Machinist's Mate and retired as a Petty Officer 1st Class in August of 1961. His Navy awards included the Good Conduct Medal with three Bronze Stars, American Defense Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal (Europe), and National Defense Service Ribbon. He then started work at the Naval Air Rework Facility in Jacksonville where he continued to work on jet engines until retiring in August 1980.

Herman had a lifelong love of gardening in which he enjoyed to the fullest in retirement. He grew vegetables, fruit, and even had pecan trees. He raised far more than he could eat and he enjoyed sharing his bounty with family and friends. In his retirement, he extended his passion to Bluebirds and Monarch butterflies. He planted flowers and put up Bluebird houses for them to thrive. He also was thrilled to share his knowledge of gardening with anyone who was interested. Herman loved to play and visit with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a loving and generous father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, who was always there to help. He will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to know him.

Herman is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Johnie, Edward, and Walter; sister Francine Crowell and daughter Charlene Holden. He is survived by his daughters Sandra Baysore, Hilda (Paul) Hand, Marcia (Kevin) Sayer, six grandchildren: Carl (Amanda) Holden, Matthew (Min) Holden, Allison (Mike) Reinboth, Heather (Shuman) Majumdar, Laura Sayer, Benjamin Sayer, six great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews. Burial service will be held at the Jacksonville National Cemetery on Friday, May 10 2024 at 11:30 AM. Cars line up in lane 3, 15 minutes before service time.
