LCDR James (Jim) Franklin Sabin
James (Jim) Franklin Sabin, 90, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2017, in Jacksonville Florida. Born in Orlando, FL, September 8, 1927, he was the son of the late James and Frances Sabin.
He grew up in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and enlisted in the US Navy near the end of World War II, directly after graduating high school. He was in for a period of time before being commissioned into the Officer ranks where he gained much experience in many facets of the navy. He held many roles during his time in the Navy including the role of commanding officer of the USS Kiowa (ATF-76) escorting ships across the ocean to foreign countries, assisted in salvage operations and participated in military training exercises at sea. In his last duty station, he served in Vietnam as the Navigator on the Battleship USS New Jersey (BB-62). He ended his 24-year Naval career retiring as a Lieutenant Commander.
He took on a second career spanning an additional 15 years in the Merchant Marine with Energy Transportation Corporation, serving as 1st Mate on a ship transporting LNG from Indonesia to Japan. After retiring from his second career, Jim pursued an aircraft pilot license, purchased his own airplane and completed his first solo flight in May, 1993. A loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather, he enjoyed spending time with his family during their visits at his home in Ocala, FL and found joy in flying his airplane. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Left to cherish his memory: sons, James A. Sabin (Lolita), Mike Sabin (Theresia) and Steve Sabin (Teri); daughters, Susan Collins (Doug, deceased), Carol Dorais (Paul), and Lisa Sabin; grandchildren, Anne, Brian, Jaime, George, Michelle, Jimmy, Jason, Eric, Nathan, Casey, Kimberly, Kristin, Chelsea and Courtney; 14 great grandchildren; sisters, Shirley (Dick) and Audrey (Chuck); dearest friend Donna Brydon and many extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Justin, Myron and Newell.
