Joan McAdoo Simmons died May 22, 2017 after a brief illness. The past few years of her life she was a resident of St. Catherine Laboure Manor nursing facility.
She is survived by her four children, all of Jacksonville: Sandra Simmons Duggan (Jim), John Wesley Simmons, Jr. (Marcia), Sidney S. Simmons, II (Ruthie) and Campbell Simmons Cowan (Gary) and by her ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She is also survived by her only sibling Robert C. McAdoo (Minky) of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, whom she adored, and by nine nieces and nephews and their many children and grandchildren.
She was born October 5, 1929 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she graduated from The Agnes Irwin School and the University of Pennsylvania. It was at Penn that she met her husband John Simmons of Jacksonville. They moved to Jacksonville in 1955 and were married 51 years until his death in 2002. She served as President of the Junior League of Jacksonville and the Jacksonville Museum of Arts and Science, now MOSH. She served on the board of Travelers Aid Society and was active in the Bolles Mothers Association, Clover Garden Circle, the National Association of Colonial Dames and was a 65 year member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She was a longtime member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church where she served on the Alter Guild. A funeral service to celebrate Joan’s life will be held at 1:30 p.m on Tuesday, May 30th at St. Marks Episcopal Church, 4129 Oxford Avenue. In lieu of flowers gifts may be made in her name to St. Marks or to the charity of one's choice.
