John Gordon Spottswood IV, aged 52, passed away on October 7, 2024. He was a beloved father, husband, son and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Gordon was born on April 5, 1972 in Jacksonville, FL and was a lifelong resident. He grew up in a home on Old King's Road with his loving parents, John Gordon Spottswood III and Debra Jo Spottswood, and brother, Justin Spottswood, close to his grandparents and aunts, uncles and cousins, with whom he made many fond childhood memories. Gordon graduated from Wolfson Senior High School, Class of 1990. Gordon's first job was at a local bike shop, and he was an avid cyclist in his teen years. He later followed in his father's footsteps and worked at Publix.
He attended college at the University of Florida, where he was active in Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and became a lifelong Gator fan. He went to work as an officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and later briefly taught middle school at Northshore K-8. He then entered a successful career in sales and management at Ferguson Waterworks. Gordon will be remembered by colleagues and friends alike for being an honest, straightforward and hardworking man.
Above all else, Gordon was a strong and loving husband to his wife, Caroline, and a devoted and doting father to his daughter, Emily. He loved teaching Emily his favorite pastimes, fishing and golfing, and later, watching her ride horses. They shared inside jokes and planned places to travel, deciding their next destination by the food they would eat as shown in the travel shows they enjoyed. His family will treasure memories of him hiking in the mountains, relaxing on beach vacations, enjoying a fancy hotel room, a steak dinner, and a good waterslide. Gordon was a loyal and moral man who always put family first. He loved to work on projects that made his family's house a home, and to instill family traditions, like celebrating Christmas morning with just Caroline and Emily. He would holler "Momma!" every time Caroline crossed the threshold of their home. He loved a DIY project and tolerated all of the family pets. A proud Florida native, he enjoyed finding hidden state parks and eating at roadside restaurants. He loved life and he loved sharing every moment with his family.
Gordon made and kept so many friends from all stages of his life. In the same way he was loyal to his family, he was a deeply loyal and caring friend to many. In his later years, he enjoyed meeting and making friends on the golf course and spent many happy days playing golf with people who brought him joy. He loved to fish and be on the water with friends. He had endless stories about his friends and their shenanigans and treasured them all.
Gordon is survived by his loving wife, Caroline Spottswood, their daughter, Emily Spottswood, his father, John Gordon Spottswood III, his brother, Justin Spottswood, and countless other family and friends. His memory will be held and cherished by all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be held in his honor on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at Deercreek Country Club, 7816 McLaurin Rd N, Jacksonville Fl, 32256, from 11:00 am to 2:00pm.
