John Phillip Sullivan, 62, passed peacefully while under hospice care on January 15,
2017. John was born in Portsmouth, Virginia on July 30,1954 to Cdr. John Sullivan and
Gloria Binzel Sullivan.
He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1972 and from Auburn University in
1976 with a Bachelor of Science, Business Administration degree in Accounting and
Finance.
John began his career with Barnett Bank repossessing cars. He advanced to
positions around the state and eventually became a Senior Vice President for the
holding company, Barnett Banks, Inc. He also worked for local banks in Jacksonville
including SunTrust Bank and Bank of America.
John donated his time to several North Florida organizations. He served on the
Board of the Salvation Army, was Past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the
Catholic Foundation of St. Augustine Diocese, as well as on the Finance Council for
Bishop Snyder High School. John was also a member of the Gator Bowl Association,
The 200 Club, The Friars Club and the Florida Yacht Club.
John had a sharp mind and loved to engage family and friends in lively debates on
any topic, but especially, politics. He was a voracious reader with a love for history and
current events. John had a beautiful voice, although only heard by his close family and
friends. He enjoyed listening to music and playing the guitar with friends in his younger
years. He was a gun collector and often enjoyed skeet shooting with his son.
John is survived by his son, John “Jack” Miller Sullivan of DelRay Beach, Florida and
his daughter, Caroline “Carrie” Elizabeth Sullivan of Dallas, Texas. He is also survived
by his sisters, Gloria Sullivan Phillips (Reid) of Greensboro, North Carolina and Susan
Sullivan Scott (John) of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, and his brother Philip “Tiger” May
(Stacy) of Jacksonville, Florida. John is survived by his former wife, Lynn Kirkland
Sullivan of Lake City, Florida and his step-father, Philip May Jr. of Jacksonville, Florida,
as well as eight nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his mother and father,
and by his nephew, Kirkland Cantey O’Steen.
The family would like to thank friends for their support through the years and express
their appreciation to John’s loyal caregivers (Michael Burns, Michael Butler, and
Derema Waldron) and the staff of Community Hospice for the kindness and care given
to John.
A memorial mass will be held on Friday, January 20, 2017 at 3:00 pm at St.
Matthew’s Catholic Church, 1773 Blanding Boulevard. Arrangements entrusted to
