Joyce Lee Henderson Akers, 70, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2019, with her daughter and devoted friend, Anne, by her side. Joyce leaves behind to cherish her memory, daughter, Holley N. Akers (James Ley), stepson, Ken Akers (Christine), grandchildren, Maggie, Gavin and Teddy, her brother, Jim Henderson (Donna), sister, Kay Schreiber (Jeff) and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.
Joyce was born on June 14, 1948, in Greensboro, N.C. to the late James Robert and Carma Lee Biggerstaff Henderson. She graduated from Charles D. Owen H.S. in 1966, where she stood out as an outstanding basketball player. She was also a very good student and majorette in the marching band. Following college, she worked for BellSouth as an engineer for 20 years in Raleigh, N.C., before relocating to Jacksonville, FL in 1991. She also worked as a crossing guard for a number of years. She made sure that her daughter made every practice and every game for every sport that she played. In her later years, she served as the head administrator for Watson Realty Property Management for 14 years, retiring in December, 2017.
Joyce's infectious laugh and smile will be greatly missed by her friends and family. She was a proud supporter of the Jacksonville Sharks and an avid Jaguars fan. She rarely said a bad word about anyone and always stood up for what she believed was right. She loved art, music, flowers, all animals, but especially hummingbirds, her friends and her dog, Marley. Greatest of all was the love for her daughter, Holley.
A celebration of Joyce's life will be held at 6:00p.m. on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at Naugle funeral home, 1203 Hendricks Avenue, 32207.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Jacksonville Humane Society or Community Hospice.
