Mrs. Loretta Jane Barnett, daughter of Mary Alice Deans and Hamilton Smith was born on September 28, 1934, in Lackawanna, New York. She was called to rest on April 14. 2024, at North Bank Nursing Home in Jacksonville Fl.
She is preceded in death by her parents Mary Alice Deans and Hamilton Smith, daughter Deborah Parker Ewing, Ozella Jones Spears, brother Osie Smith and sister Mae Smith.
After her graduation, Loretta moved to Buffalo, Ny to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse. She attended the University of the State of New York and Jamestown school of Practical nursing in 1964. After graduation she worked at Buffalo, General, Miller Filmore Hospital, Sister of Charity hospital and United Church of Christ Nursing Home.
Loretta was also very active in her community she became a member of Walls Memorial A.M.E Church. She was a longtime faithful member under the leadership of Rev. Randolph Walls. She was a member of the Senior Usher board and Missionary Department. She often filled in as a substitute teacher and school nurse in the Buffalo, New York school system.
Later in life she moved to Jacksonville, Fl to be near her son's. Loretta joined Bethel Baptist Institutional Church of Jacksonville, Fl under the leadership of Bishop McKissick Sr, and Bishop McKissick Jr.
Loretta continued to work in her field of nursing. She worked at Orange Park Junior high and Orange Park High School as a nurse. She also worked at Signature Nursing home and Life Care Center of Orange Park.
She leaves to cherish her memories her brother Douglas Smith, sister Shirley Smith, three sons Robert Parker, Maurice Brown, Carl Barnett and her honorary son Carlos Ziegler. Grand-daughters Sharon Cobbs and Lauren Brooks, 10 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
