Lou Beth Shoemake Kelly, 91, died June 24, 2019, after a short illness. She was born in Alligator Township, SC, on April 28, 1928, the ninth child of James Ervin Shoemake and Queen Blackwell Shoemake. Her family moved to Camden, SC when Lou Beth was three years old, following the untimely death of her father. She became a lifelong member of Hermitage Baptist Church in Camden and subsequently raised her family in this church. She was married to Angus Martin Kelly, Sr. March 28, 1948, on Easter Sunday.
She graduated third in her senior class from Camden High School, attended Columbia Commercial College, and later graduated with an Associate of Arts Degree in Medical Records Management with certification as Accredited Records Technician. She retired in 1992 as Director of Medical Records of Kershaw County Hospital after 30 years of employment.
She made friends throughout her life, and that continued through her years in Florida, where she moved to Assisted Living, close to daughters Karen and Barbara. She was quick and intelligent, warm, funny, and the loving matriarch of her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents and all siblings, husband Angus, and her daughter Carol Kelly Cooke. She is survived by her daughters Karen Kelly (Robert Witt) and Barbara Kelly Jennings (Clyde), and her sons Angus Martin "Marty" Kelly, Jr. (Debbie) and Joseph Bennett "Jody" Kelly (Cheryl), eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and many dear friends and caregivers who meant so much to her.
The family will receive visitors at Kornegay Funeral Home in Camden at 6:00-7:30 PM on Saturday, June 29. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, June 30, at 2:00 PM at Hermitage Baptist Church, Camden, followed by interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Camden, SC. Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation or to Hermitage Baptist Church, Camden, SC. A later memorial celebration of her life will be held at Brooks Bartram Crossing in Jacksonville, FL.
