Lucy Chiquelin Fountain 1930-2013 On the morning of September 22, 2013, Lucy Chiquelin Fountain passed away peacefully at the Earl B. Hadlow Center for Caring in Jacksonville, Florida. Lucy Edelen Chiquelin was born in Louisville, Kentucky on January 21, 1930. She was named after her Aunt Lucy Riley and was one of three children and the only daughter of Minnie Camille (Riley) and William Henry Chiquelin. As a child, Lucy lived with her family in Springfield, Ohio. At the age of seven, Lucy’s father, a watchmaker, moved the family to Lafayette, Louisiana. She was very active in dance and tumbling. While in Louisiana, she participated in many Mardi Gras parades and even becoming a Mardi Gras Queen. Lucy attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette where she became a cheerleader. During the summers she worked as a counselor at camp Kittiwake in Gulfport, MS and attended an Aquatics School in North Carolina where she learned to sail. Lucy transferred to Delta State College in Cleveland, Mississippi to continue her education. It was at Delta State that she met George Fountain in Music Appreciation class. After having coffee on their first date, Lucy called her mother to inform her that she had met her husband. Lucy and George were married September 8, 1951. Lucy and George began their married life in Jackson, MS. However, their home was often moved as they lived in Shreveport, LA, Miami, FL, Orlando, FL, Panama City, FL, back to Orlando, FL, Haines City, FL Jacksonville, FL, Tavares, FL and then back to Jacksonville, FL. Each move found Lucy to be a supportive housewife and mother for her three children while George was away working. She always kept her smile and kind spirit. Lucy was an avid camper along with her family. She served as Boy Scout Den Mother and Girl Scout leader. She was an active church member and taught Sunday school in most places where she lived. She was a substitute and permanent teacher in the public school system when time allowed. Lucy served as President of the Tavares Women’s Club and for her service to the community was awarded Woman of the Year in 1981. Lucy enjoyed cooking, cross-stitching, crafting and crocheting. Her children’s favorite meal was chicken and dumplings and homemade biscuits. After relocating to Jacksonville in 1982, Lucy and George began attending Craft shows to sell their crafts, which lead them to travel from New York to Texas, highlighted by month long Christmas shows at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, TN. In 2004, their crafting travels ended to concentrate on Lucy’s health and her focus then turned to her orchids, violets, humming birds and various critters that were fed each night in the back yard. Lucy is predeceased by her parents William and Minnie Chiquelin and her two brothers William (Bill) and Allen. Lucy is survived by her husband of 62 years, George Ashley Fountain and her three children, George Walter Fountain, Donald Ashley Fountain and Lori Fountain Brusoski. Lucy was blessed with two daughter in-laws, one son in-law, eight grand children, two boys and six girls and five great grandchildren, two boys and three girls. Lucy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She loved her family and friends dearly. Lucy’s last day with us was remarkable, with her unending smile she asked, “Do you know how lucky I am?” We all are blessed to have had her in our lives. We are the lucky ones.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, October 4th at 11:00am at Mandarin United Methodist Church. A reception will follow. Lucy will be laid to rest in Glenwood Cemetery, Yazoo City, MS thereafter.
In lieu of flowers, Lucy, along with her family, request that donations be made to Florida United Methodist Children’s Home, P.O. Box 6299, Deltona, FL 32728 or French Camp Academy, One Fine Place, French Camp, MS 39745
