Lyle W. Smith, local resident, passed away on Wednesday July 5th. He was born in Chicago in 1934, raised in central Illinois and lived in Montgomery, AL for many years. His parents and his brother-in-law Chris Hughes predeceased him. Lyle is survived by Maureen, his wife and best friend of 50 years; his daughter Carolyn Smith and grandson Corey Smith of Montgomery, AL; his brothers-in-law and their wives Gerald and Vicky Hughes, Ted and Susan Hughes, Brian and Kathy Hughes, and Chris’ wife Barbara Hughes. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Sylvia Hughes and LaVerne Tilly with her husband Steve as well as several nieces and nephews.
Lyle served on active duty in the US Army from 1960 to 1962 at Ft Hood, Texas and was a member of the American Legion. Lyle enjoyed time with family and all kinds of music. He will always remain in the hearts of family and friends who loved him and held him in high regard.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at San Jose Catholic Church on Saturday July 8th at 9:00 AM. The family will meet with friends after the service in the parish hall. Light refreshments will be served. On Monday, July 10th the family will have a private service at Jacksonville National Cemetery. Lyle will rest near other family members. If you wish, memorials may be made to K-9’s for Warriors, Salvation Army, or the scholarship at Illinois Wesleyan University created in honor of his parents: Helen Ringeisen and Lyle A Smith Endowed Scholarship for Music.
