Martha Jean Pope Cummins
Mrs. Martha Cummins, age 95, of Jacksonville, FL, formerly of Atlanta, passed
away Saturday December 9, 2023 in Jacksonville.
Funeral services for Mrs. Cummins will be conducted Thursday December 14,
2023 from 1:15 PM to 2:00 PM at the Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie
Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32218. Brent Beaird will be officiating.
Mrs. Cummins was born on June 26, 1928 in Akron, Ohio to the late Howard
Heard Pope and Winnie Lipham Pope. Her family moved to Franklin, Georgia
shortly after her birth, because The Great Depression hit their family particularly
hard and they had family in the Franklin area. When she graduated from Heard
County High School in 1945, she moved to Atlanta, GA and got a job as a waitress.
It was there that she met her future husband, Harold Cummins. He was a Navy
Pilot in WWII who showed up for lunch with a fellow Navy Pilot. He handed her a
card that asked for a date. She kept the card. It was love at first sight.
After they were married, he studied to be a meteorologist at Florida State
University in Tallahassee, FL. Because of his job, they lived all over the United
States in places like Rock Springs, WY; North Platt, NE; Houston, MO; and finally
settled down in Atlanta, GA.
She was a wonderful seamstress and had her own business in Atlanta making
hand sewn custom draperies. After retirement, they moved to Hilton Head, SC
where she became assistant manager of a jewelry store and a bridal consultant.
After they retired again, they traveled all over the United States and Canada and
lived full time in a Motor Home. Harold drove and Martha was the navigator.
She loved the Lord and read her bible daily. While still in Atlanta, she taught
children and teen Sunday school classes and was a Girl's Auxiliary leader. She
believed in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and is celebrating in heaven with
those that have gone before her.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Harold Cummins of Atlanta,
GA; brother, William Fuller Pope of Dallas, GA; sister, Estelle Pope Moxley Gray of
Franklin, GA; sister, Lilly Pope Andrews of Brookhaven, GA; brother, Howard
Heard Pope, Jr of Brookhaven, GA; niece, Patricia "Trisha" Pope Aday of Dallas,
GA; nephews, Hurley Moxley and Anthony Moxley. She is survived by her
daughter, Deborah Cummins Mahanay (Jerry) of Jacksonville, FL; several
nephews, Billy Pope, John Pope, Steve Pope, Mike Pope of Dallas, GA and Norvell
Gray of Franklin, GA , as well as several grand nephews and grand nieces.
She will be buried at the Jacksonville National Cemetery.
