Mary Jean Mackey, age 93, passed away on Friday, September 14, 2018. Born on February 15, 1925 in Madison Kansas, she was the first of Dan and Ida Luthi's three children. She attended Kansas State University, graduating with a B.S. in home economics and chemistry, and furthered her studies at the University of Indiana, becoming a Registered Dietitian. Mary Jean met and married Clarence Wells Mackey in St. Louis, Missouri while she worked at Barnes Hospital. Together they had five children, three of whom are in medicine and two of whom are in business. She was active in church and the community and was her children's biggest cheerleader.
Mary Jean is survived by her brother Harold Luthi and her children, David Mackey, M.D. of Houston, TX, Kevin Mackey, M.D. of Williamsburg, VA, Ann Mackey of Jacksonville, FL, Warren Mackey of New York, NY and Steven Mackey of Gainesville, FL as well as numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Mary Jean relocated to Jacksonville, FL in 1997 and for the last ten years lived happily at Cypress Village, where she made many friends that meant a great deal to her. Her life will be celebrated at a memorial service on Saturday, September 22, at 2:00 PM in Egret Hall at Cypress Village. She will be laid to rest at Bellerive Gardens Cemetery in St. Louis next to her husband Clarence on his birthday, September 29 at 10:00 AM, with a graveside service. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Mayo Clinic for cancer research or to the Salvation Army.
