Mary Lott Walker (Aunt Me Nott) loved her city of Blackshear, her county of Pierce, her state of Georgia and her country the United States of America devotedly. As a schoolteacher, she loved her students and fellow teachers. As a daughter, sister, and aunt she loved her family. As a disciple of God, she loved her church and its congregation. She will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to have worked with her and mentored by her.
On Wednesday night, May 12, 2021 Mary Lott stepped into Heaven greeted by a host of joyous angels. Mary Lott Walker had a rich heritage in Pierce County, Georgia, being a fifth generation of the Walker family. She continued in the footsteps of her pioneer ancestors who historically have contributed to the growth and development of Pierce County and the state of Georgia. She touched the lives of so many families over several generations. Born on October 8, 1935 in Waycross, Georgia she was the daughter of the late Lyman Jackson and Huel Peacock Walker. She had two amazing sisters in their own right; Margaret and Judy, who are also educators and community leaders. This family had been raised to be servants of their communities.
Mary Lott was a graduate of Blackshear High School Class of 1953. A graduate of GSCW (Georgia State College for Women) now, Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Georgia, she was editor of the college newspaper and honored as a recipient of the Who's Who among American Colleges and Universities. She pursued a career in public education returning home to her home county, where she remained. One of her greatest educational achievements was organizing the first student government council at Blackshear High School and then going on to serving as the State Advisor for the Association of Student Councils of Georgia for 25 years. She served as an advisor and member on the National Association of Student Councils where she traveled throughout the United States representing leadership among the finest young minds in America. Under her leadership, Blackshear High School/Pierce County High School served as the president school for the Georgia Association of Student Councils. It produced the first student to serve on the National Student Advisory Board. During this time, she was honored as Star Teacher five times.
Throughout her lifetime, Mary Lott became heavily involved in political campaigns working directly with numerous gubernatorial and presidential candidates including President Jimmy Carter, John Glenn, NASA astronaut, and many other well-known political leaders. Her own personal political career was established with winning numerous terms as city councilwoman for Blackshear. She became the first woman in the history of Blackshear to serve as the Mayor pro-tem where she worked as a city councilwoman for 16 years. As city council chair overseeing the Blackshear City Parks and Cemeteries, she enhanced the parks with new playground equipment and tennis courts and improved the maintenance and enhancements of the city cemetery.
While she was heavily involved in government activities, she did enjoy sporting events with her nephews and others closely following the Atlanta Braves and the Georgia Bulldogs. On the way to the annual summer student government workshops at Berry College in Rome, she, with her nephews, stopped to take in some games of the Atlanta Braves in the former Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. She was also thrilled to see Pierce County High School win its first football state championship.
She was a charter member of the Pierce County Historical & Genealogical Society and served as vice president for more than 10 years. During this period, she was active in helping preserve the historic land of the Civil War prison campsite. She had also donated numerous books and genealogical research to the Marion Anderson Library in Blackshear. Having deeply rooted heritage, she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and served as Regent of the John Floyd Chapter of the DAR. She has been a member of DAR for more than 40 years. Mary Lott had recently been accepted into the Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims and Colonial Dames of the 17th Century. In addition to these organizations, one of her more passionate endeavors was helping establish the Huxford Genealogical Society located in Homerville, Georgia. She served on the board of directors for more than forty years. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma for 46 years.
Mary Lott received the Book of Golden Deeds from her Exchange Club chapter, the most prestigious community service award given by the Exchange Club. During the 1996 Olympics held in Atlanta, Mary Lott was selected to serve as an Olympic Torchbearer for her community. Her name is engraved among the participants on a granite memorial in the Blackshear City Park. She helped organize the Ramblin' Rose Red Hat Society chapter in Blackshear where she served as Queen Mother since its establishment. She loved wearing those "red hats" and had an extensive collection.
Above most of all her community involvement, Mary Lott was a devoted, active member of the Blackshear Presbyterian Church for more than 67 years. Following in her father's footsteps, she served as Elder, Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, president of the Women of the Church, and ultimately held the highest office in the Savannah Presbytery as Moderator. Mary Lott more recently served as Clerk of Session for the Blackshear Presbyterian Church.
Throughout her life, Mary Lott Walker devoted her energy and enthusiasm to educating and inspiring young people to achieve greatness within their communities. Mary Lott's greatest joy and contribution in her life's journey was as a devoted aunt to her nieces Elizabeth, Mary Margaret and Rebecca, and her nephews David and John in addition to her next generation of great nieces and nephews, Madison, Liam, Daniel, Susannah, and Samuel.
A memorial service for Mary Lott will be held Monday, May 17, 2021 at 11:00 o'clock from the Blackshear Presbyterian Church.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 16, 2021, at Pearson-Dial Funeral Home from 3-5 pm.
She will be laid to rest among family and friends in the historic Blackshear City Cemetery, Blackshear, Georgia. A private interment will be held by the family at a later date.
