Maureen Smith passed away on Thursday September 21ST 2017. She was a retired teacher with over 30 years in classrooms in Jacksonville, FL; Alabama & Illinois. She attended Jacksonville FL University & later earned degrees from Illinois State University & the University of Alabama.

Maureen was born in Miami where her father was stationed at the beginning of WWII. Her parents, Sylvia & Gerald F. Hughes Navy CPO AUOC retired, her brother Chris Hughes, and recently her husband Lyle A. Smith, predeceased her. Maureen is survived by her daughter Carolyn Smith and grandson Corey Smith of Montgomery, AL; her brothers and their wives Gerald and Vicky Hughes, Ted and Susan Hughes, Brian and Kathy Hughes, Chris Hughes wife Barbara Hughes, and Jim Hughes. She is also survived by her sisters Sylvia Hughes and LaVerne Tilley with her husband Steve as well as several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at San Jose Catholic Church on Wednesday September 27th at 10:30 AM. The family will meet with friends after the service in the parish hall. Refreshments will be served. Maureen will be laid to rest at Jacksonville National Cemetery next to her husband of 50 years and also near her parents.

A few coined words from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales aptly describe Maureen: "Gladly would she learn & gladly teach".
