Oleta Edna Bethel Thigpen, 96, of Jacksonville, Florida passed away on Saturday, January 13,2024, in Jacksonville, Florida.
Oleta was born to Jack and Edna Whitfield on December 4, 1927, in Little Rock Arkansas. She is survived by her loving sister, Freda Murray; her children Barbara McKenney (Roland), Bobby Bethel (Pam), Brenda Reese (Randy), Beverly Smith (Wayne), Becky Bethel, Mary DeCamargo (Jeff); sixteen grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter, with a second great-great granddaughter due in May.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, Joe Thigpen, her brothers, Jack "Buck" Whitfield and Alfred Whitfield, her son, Bill Bethel and her great granddaughter, Brigitte Jane Weathers.
Oleta and Joe were long-time, active members of Aspire Church San Marco, previously
Southside Baptist, enjoying their Sunday School class and singing in the Senior Choir. For many years, they taught the Word of God to the youth at church.
Oleta was known for her cooking, and she loved to share it with others. Her grandchildren will keep family recipes alive by passing them down to her great-great grandchildren.
Oleta touched so many lives and was cherished by friends and family alike.
