Oscar E. Cannington Sr., 82, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 30th. He was born in Quitman, GA., on May 7th, 1932 to James Hushel and Jewell Mae Cannington. He graduated from Hillsborough High School in 1951 and then went to The University of Tampa for 2 years. After college, he joined the Navy in 1952 for 4 years as an electrician for telecommunications in the Korean War and served on board the USS Frank E. Evans and the USS Toledo. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Patricia Ann Rhodes; brother Bryan (Sherry) Cannington of Deland, Fl.; two daughter’s Janalee Gail Sandlin of Peachtree City, GA. and Shawn (Kelly) Thagard of Callahan, FL.; son Oscar E. Cannington Jr. of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren Chris Sandlin (Sheila), Whitney Sandlin, Christie Simpkins, Tyson Sandlin (Kate), Farren Floyd, Victoria (Bradley) Pickett and Taylor (Joshua) Prall; great-grandchildren Tessa Sandlin, Nash Sandlin, Kayden Floyd and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents James and Jewell; brother James H. Cannington Jr. and son-in-law Zachary Marty Sandlin. Oscar was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother and worked tirelessly to provide for them. He retired after 36 years as Regional Manager and Purchasing Agent from the merged ABC Theatres/Plitt Theatres. He and Patsy; together then pursued and became franchise Owner/Operator of Jimmie’s Buttermilk Chicken on Normandy Blvd. for the next 27 years until he sold the business in 2009.He was a member of Spring Glenn United Methodist Church for 56 years and was also a longtime member of the Duval Masonic Lodge. His interest ranged from the admiration of cars and boats, gardening and yard work, listening to Joel Osteen sermon’s, watching Florida Gator’s football, and he and Patsy traveling to their 2nd home in the Blue Ridge Mountain of Fines Creek, NC. and cruising to Alaska on numerous occasions. Oscar was known for his kind and caring nature, his generosity to others but above all Oscar “Loved” talking to people and they loved him.
