Our beautiful mother, Peggy Jean Porter Norton died at age 92 on June 6, 2024
in Bowdon, Georgia. She was born in Clinton, NC on August 10, 1931 to James
M. and Lillie W. Porter. She graduated from Salemburg High School in 1948 and
went on to further her education at Pineland College in Salemburg and High
Point University in High Point, NC. She went on to work in the Register of Deeds
office in Clinton, NC until her marriage to James Norton in 1950, with whom she
attended school beginning in the 1st grade. James served in the United States
Air Force and his service took the young couple on travels as far as Japan, quite
a long way from farm life in Salemburg.
Peggy and James lived in Atlanta and Chicago before settling in Jacksonville on
Jean Court with their infant son, Kyle. Their second son Karlton and daughter
Karen were welcomed in short order and their entire family were extremely active
members of the Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church for over 50 years. While
James worked to support the family, Peggy stayed home and gave her children
all of herself. Peggy loved music, dancing, cooking, canasta and bridge. And
while she never learned to swim she loved the beach and taking her children
there to enjoy the ocean. When her children were adults she re-entered the
workforce as office manager at Cherry Drywall where she worked for 20 years.
Her last years were spent in Bowdon Georgia with her daughter Karen and
son-in-law Dennis who cared for her with the greatest love and devotion.
Peggy was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, James Norton. She is
survived by her children Kyle Norton (Kimberly), Karlton Norton (Tammy), Karen
Downs (Dennis), her brother Sidney Porter (Janice), her two brother in laws
Gene Norton (Carrie), and Bobby Norton. She was dearly loved by her 5
grandchildren, Bethany, Bill, Betsy, Bellamy, and Layla Grace. She leaves many
nieces and nephews who keep wonderful memories of her in their hearts.
