Richard John Schweiger
March 23, 1946 — March 10, 2018
Richard John Schweiger (AKA the Commander Rick) as the kids all knew him passed peacefully away at the Hadlow Hospice Center in Jacksonville, Florida on March 9, 2018.
He was born March 23, 1946 in New York. He is predeceased by his father George Schweiger and sister Barbara Benson.
Rick graduated from Terry Parker High School and then began life's adventures!
While in MICU at V of F Health Center, he told Mark and I his heart and lung issues were from too many years of hard living and he "didn't regret a minute of it".
He leaves behind a huge clan of "kids" that loved him � Three generations worth! Garage sales were his favorite Saturday pastime for many years. Some of his passionate purchases were items for these kids to play with in Nana's amazing driveway. I think all but a few have played tennis with him with racquets he found. I bet more than one have fallen off of skateboards he found at sales. The riding toys, huge tractors & trucks to "drive" and sports equipment were enjoyed by all.
Mark and I were blessed to be able to get Nana to hospice to see him. The staff at U of F Health Community Hospice were angels on earth. From Suzanne giving me comfort in the ER to Neelie giving Rick comfort while in MICU to our final angel -Elizabeth! Ricks last two wishes were to see his mother in front of their home and hug her! Elizabeth was able to make it happen. She, along with three amazing young men from Liberty Medical Transport, made his wish come true. They drove to the house on the way to hospice. Backed into the driveway, took the stretcher out � lowered it for Nana to love on her son!
At hospice, he had some of the very same wonderful nurses that took care of Mom Dec/Jan. in the exact same room she was in #306! Yes! The ducks were there! When we asked Rick if he and mom would stay out of trouble, he shook his head No!
So now the checkered flag has waved him on from his life on earth.
So now he will have the best seat in the house for his Nascar races, golf tourney and Jaguar games! So long Commander Rick � you will be missed. His wishes were to have no service.
