Rita S. Igleheart (nee Smith) died at her home in Atlantic Beach, FL, surrounded by her children, on February 9, 2018. She was 89 years old.
Mrs. Igleheart was born to the late Irmegarde and Malcolm Smith in Evanston, IL. She grew up in Greenwich, CT, attended Rosemary Hall, and graduated from Greenwich Academy. She attended Columbia University and the University of Connecticut. Before her marriage, she designed and constructed dioramas for The Museum of Natural History in New York.
For many years, she lived with her husband, John D. Igleheart, in Redding, CT and in Dale (Seabrook), SC. She was highly artistic and she loved to create beautiful spaces - her home on Wimbee Creek was an example of her talent. Mrs. Igleheart was passionate about historic preservation, antiques, dogs, and the sport of hunting.
Mrs. Igleheart is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kit and Pete Washburn of Jacksonville, FL; her son and daughter-in-law, Jeb and Kate Ebbott of Manchester Center, VT, her daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Bob Monahan of Raphine, VA; three step-children, Christopher Igleheart, Robin Allie, and Wendy Lange, 15 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, JD Igleheart, and her sister, Kaye Hogan.
A memorial service celebrating Mrs. Igleheart's life will be held Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at Union Church, 1004 11th Street, Port Royal, SC at 10:30 am and she will be interred at the Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, SC following the service. All are welcome to attend and celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Historic Beaufort Foundation, PO Box 11, Beaufort, SC, 29901.
