Dr. Roy Harris Schnauss, M.D., 83, a native of Jacksonville, FL passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving wife and children on Nov 26, 2023 following a brief illness.
He followed the footsteps of his father, grandfather, and great- grandfather in medicine. An ophthalmologist, he has practiced in the Five Points/Riverside area since 1972.
Dr. Schnauss went to undergraduate and medical school at Emory University in Atlanta, GA and interned at University Hospital, now Shands in Jacksonville, FL. He spent two years in the Navy as a General Medical Officer where his tour included a year in Danang, Vietnam.
Following his military commitment, Dr. Schnauss returned to Jacksonville and spent a year in practice with his father before returning to Emory for a residency in ophthalmology, a field where he could combine his love of medicine and surgery.
Dr. Schnauss practiced at St. Vincent's Medical Center, he was Chief of Ophthalmology at St. Luke's Hospital and Chief of Ophthalmology at Riverside Hospital. In addition to his work as a physician, Dr. Schnauss is proud of the work he did as president of the Old St. Luke's Hospital Restoration Committee, working side by side with Representative Charles E. Bennett.
He also enjoyed gardening, history, and collecting antique automobiles. He was a member of Ye Mystic Revellers, The Sons of the American Revolution and the Rolls Royce Owners Club.
Dr. Schnauss is preceded in death by his parents, Fauntleroy Harris Schnauss and Jewell Wiggins Schnauss, along with his brother, John W. Schnauss.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Melody Baker Schnauss; son, Roy H. Schnauss, III, Jacksonville, FL; daughter, Katherine Schnauss Naugle (Cameron), Jacksonville, FL; brother, Frederick W. Schnauss; sister-in-law, Jeanette D. Schnauss, wife of the late John W. Schnauss; two grandchildren, Logan Cameron Naugle and Abigail Colene Naugle, nieces and nephews, Janet Schnauss; John R. Schnauss , Michelle Holman, Natalie C. Hilderbrand and Elizabeth Gardner and many cousins and lifelong friends and extended family.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1415 McDuff Avenue South, Jacksonville, FL. Entombment will follow at the family mausoleum in Oaklawn Cemetery. Reception to be held at Timuquana Country Club at 6 pm.
