Roy Samuel “Sam” Van Duyn passed away March 20, 2017 after a brave struggle with ALS, aka Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
Sam was born in Jacksonville on November 22, 1950, raised in Mandarin and lived most of his adult life in Fruit Cove, where he left a multitude of friends and neighbors. He graduated from Wolfson High School and attended the University of Florida. He was self-employed as a carpenter but was skilled in several trades and left many friends with examples of his handiwork. His favorite pastime was fishing Florida waters.
Sam is preceded in death by his parents, Abram H. and Ruth W. Van Duyn. He is survived by his brothers, William B. Van Duyn (Linda) of Orange Park and Dr. John W. Van Duyn (Gwen) of Edenton, NC; and his sister, Rhelda Losco (Fred), of St. Johns. He has numerous other family members who will miss him greatly.
His memorial service will be held Saturday, April 1 at 1:00 PM at his home, 1154 Ward’s Place in Fruit Cove, followed by a catered luncheon on the grounds for family and friends. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida.
