On September 27, 2023 we said "goodbye for now" to Sarah McCarthy Hourihan, our mom, our Grandma Sarah, our Mazur (inside joke) our teacher and our best friend.
Sarah was born to Daniel Leo and Freda Mally McCarthy on July 9, 1938 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Sadly, Freda Mally McCarthy became Sarah's heavenly mother in September of that year. Dan went on to marry Grace DeNino who quickly adopted baby Sarah and lovingly raised her along with 3 younger sisters.
The family moved to Miami FL when Sarah was a young teenager. In Miami she spent many hours involved in the youth Civil Air Patrol - crazy about airplanes - she always dreamed big and aimed high.
Sarah graduated from Miami Senior High School and went on to attend Barry College.
Sarah became the matriarch of her family, daughters Erin Fanning (Rusty), Jennifer Villegas (Fred) and son Dan Hourihan (Libia), her six grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She was the glue that held us together and the backbone keeping us strong.
Sarah was a mixed media artist and spent many years being inspired by the Southwest while living in Arizona and Southern California. Sarah often studied with her favorite artists in Santa Fe, perfecting colors and textures and techniques -turning almost everything she touched into art. Magically innovative, she inspired others to think outside of the box and use creativity daily. She would tell her grandchildren to "See possibility everywhere...mountain trails, people watching, playgrounds and beaches. These treasure troves serve as inspiration for my art~ " While strolling on the beach or walking her beloved Wookee it was well known that her pockets would quickly fill with rocks and sticks or shells and leaves. The detrius of life.
She taught generation's to stand strong and never give up without a fight, pouring her soul into each one of us . The queen of our hive. We love you to the moon and beyond.
Sarah was preceded in death by her mothers - Freda and Grace, her father Daniel and her baby sister Annette. She was also preceded in death by her one true soul mate, may they find happiness together at last. Fly high like the free spirit you always were, and remember, knockers up.
A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held at Adele Grage Cultural Center in Atlantic Beach on Wednesday, November 22 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
