Sharon Elizabeth Holmberg passed from this life Thursday March 3rd, 2016. She was born on April 11, 1923 to Flora and James Basil O'Mallan. In addition to her parents, her brother, James (Jimmy), and sisters, Patricia Beardsley and Sally Pendergraft predeceased her.
June 10th, 1944 was the start of her storybook marriage to Phillip John Holmberg. After receiving a telegram informing her of him being shot down in WWII Germany, her fighter pilot returned to her and his newborn little girl, Sharon Ingrid (Sherrie) after being a prisoner of war in Moosberg, Germany. Their sons, Phillip Lars and Eric Charles were also added to the mix in due time.
Besides being a devoted wife and mother to her three children, she enjoyed playing tennis (playing nearly every day for 30+ years) , running 5ks, cooking, entertaining, getting her airplane pilot's license, sewing, singing with Sweet Adeline's, tap dancing, volunteering with the Cathedral Foundation, assisting with teaching Braille to the blind, and being a member of Rotary's Inner Wheel. She later opened her own interior decorating business, Happy Endings, focusing on custom homes and condominiums, and enjoyed working alongside her husband and sons who ran Holmberg Construction Co.
Throughout their marriage, they enjoyed traveling worldwide to places including Central and South America, Africa, Europe and Asia. They learned to sail "Tayo", the 30 foot Morgan Out-Islander they purchased in 1969. Tayo was her nickname from childhood and PJ and her greatgrandchildren called her that. They sailed Tayo around the coast of Florida twice. They would also charter boats and sail in the Carribbean. Phil and Sharon were also show stoppers on the dance floor and had a lot of fun with the tennis/dinner group of friends, called "Double Faults".
She leaves behind, but lives on in the hearts of her husband of nearly 72 years, PJ Holmberg, her brother; William (Bill) and his wife, Gerladine (Gerri); her three children: Sherrie, Phil, and Eric and his wife, Helen; her grandsons: Brett Marsico, Eric Christian (Kathleen O'Reardon), Phillip Blaine, and Sean Searcy Holmberg; her granddaughters: Michelle Marsico (Paul) Koburger, Jennifer Marsico, Kimberly Holmberg (Adam) Piety, Holly (Justin ) Holmberg, Heike (Alex) Holmberg Slinin; her 6 great grandchildren and 3 great, great grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces and their children.
She was proud of her Irish heritage and surely the Irish eyes are smiling on the life well lived by our "Sharon", "Tayo", "Grandma Holmberg". Rest in peace.
