Sharon McLaughlin Meeks, 76, of Suwanee, Georgia passed on Monday, July 15th, 2024 with her beloved son Gavin at her side. She was born in Jacksonville, Florida on April 19th, 1948 to Emmett and Estelle McLaughlin. Her younger brother Glynn soon joined the family. Growing up Sharon filled her time with reading and dance, and later played the flute - all loves she passed on to her daughter Megan.
After graduation from Englewood High School Sharon attended college at the University of Florida. Although set to go to school at Florida State University, and unexpected evening at Gator Growl forever cemented her love for Gainesville and the Gators. It was there the the first lines of the love story of her life were written over blue stationary as pen pals overseas with a young soldier serving in a Vietnam - Douglas Meeks.
She quickly overcame any misgivings in his shorter stature as he joined her to attend college, forming many forever friendships there. They were soon married on June 5th, 1970 in a small, casual ceremony at an Episcopalian chapel directly across from the university. Forever after when walking his children across campus, Doug Meeks would never fail to call out the chapel and 'the scene of the crime'.
After graduation both Sharon and Doug returned to Jacksonville to both begin their careers in education with the Duval County School System and to build their life together. After finding their forever home in San Marco, they welcomed their first child. Megan was born in July of 1976 and she was soon joined by her brother Gavin four years later. Sharon and Doug were both devoted to the profession of teaching and life at 1745 Belmonte Avenue was always filled with laughter, love and learning.
Sharon is preceded in death by : Her parents, Emmett and Estelle McLaughlin and her husband Douglas Meeks.
She is survived by : Her loving children Megan Hethington (Frank) and Gavin as well as her brother Glynn and countless dear friends that made the days after the loss of the love her beloved husband ever lighter.
