Canavan, Steven James Richard of Jacksonville, Florida passed away peacefully in sleep on Friday January 10th. Steven was born in Bay City, MI and graduated from John Marshall High School in Indianapolis, IN Class of 1975.
After graduating high school he joined the Navy following his father’s footsteps. After 22 years of serving his country he retired a Chief Petty Officer. During his Navy career he did several tours on aircraft carriers including the USS George Washington, which classified him as a “shellback”. Steve was a crew chief over 7 helicopters on the George Washington. Stateside his service included 2 ½ years as crew chief for Blue Angels #6 “Opposing Solos”
After his navel career he spent 16 years as the Safety Officer for the City of Jacksonville. He Loved Gods Great Oceans and was an avid fisherman.
He was a loving father, Amazing brother, uncle, “Papa” and had a heart of gold. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Thomas S and Donna Canavan. He is survived by his daughters, Katie and Kelly Canavan; son, James Holeman (Brittany); three brothers, John Bacci (Linda), Tom Canavan (“JJ”), Kenneth Canavan; two sisters, Cindy Sergeant (Jerry) and Cathy Brower (Tom); fiancé, Melody Huddleston; one granddaughter, Ella; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held noon Saturday January 18th at Naugle Funeral Home, 1203 Hendricks Avenue Jacksonville, FL 32207. A military inurnment will be scheduled at a later date at the Jacksonville National Cemetery.
Final thoughts from Steve,…. “I want you to know that God has let me experience more than I ever expected in my life, and more than many may expect to. I am grateful for all He has done for me, my family, friends, work and experiences. He never failed to forgive me or cover me, He only loved me and told me His Mercy was abundant upon me. Thank you Father.”

In lieu of flowers a Steve Canavan memorial fund has been set up to help compensate expenses. Any amount above and beyond will be donated to the charity Steve chose, Feed the Children.
