Virginia L Messer, 104, of Burlington, NC, passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 26, 2025 at Coble Creek in the Twin Lakes Community. She was born on May 24, 1920 in Detroit, MI to Ira and Lillie Fields. She moved to Ludington, MI where she attended school and met her husband, Nelson A. Messer of Ludington. They were married in Ludington in 1940 surrounded by family and friends in a Lutheran Church ceremony and spent the next 59 years in love together until Nelson passed in 1999.

Nelson joined the Army during WWII and Virginia moved to Joplin, MO to be with him. While living in Joplin, her first son, Jay, was born. After Nelson was discharged from the Army, the family moved to

Ludington and then to Toledo where her second son, David was born. In 1954, the family moved to Jacksonville, FL where Virginia began a career as a legal secretary, a career that spanned more than 30 years. Virginia was active in St. Mathews Lutheran Church, their choir and various other church organizations. Virginia and Nelson moved to Burlington, NC in 1996 where they lived in the Twin Lakes retirement community.

Virginia is proceeded in death by her Parents, Ira and Lillie Fields; her husband, Nelson Messer; and her son, Jay Messer.

She is survived by her son, David Messer and his wife Deborah Messer; her daughter-in-law, Janice Messer; her grandchildren, Christopher Messer, Kimberly Ross, Kelly Cullen, John Messer and Elizabeth Ferrington; and her great grandchildren; Tyler Ross, Victoria Ross, Annabelle Ross, McKenzie Cullen and Patrick Cullen.

Services for Virginia will be held at the Jacksonville National Cemetery at 12:30 PM on Thursday, March 6, 2025, where she will be laid to rest with her husband.
