Walter Raymond Bassett 89 of Edgewater, FL sadly left us on Saturday, December 2, 2023. Walter is survived by his daughter Carol Bassett (Allen Cloer), his son Frank Bassett (Lori Bassett), his daughter Janet Tighe, his grandchildren Dr Danielle Tighe, David
Nash - Pappas, (Margaret Nash-Pappas), Ben Pappas, Tiffani Stump (Paige Stump), Dr.Olivia Tighe, Josh Brunza (April Brunza), and Shannon Tighe. He is also survived by several siblings including his brother John Bassett (Pat), and his sisters Phyllis Coombs,
Linda Anderson, Cynthia (Dave Wildowski), Barbara (Jeff Bitgood), Sheryl (Steve Shea), as well as several nieces and nephews, and his longtime friend Lucinda Swanson.
Walter was a Marine, Beloved Father, Friend, and Grandfather. He had an infectious sense of humor, and people loved him. In his younger years he played baseball,and was a ringer on several teams in the Boston area. Later he went on to coach baseball. He needed to stay busy. Whether he was building a tree house for his grandsons, or climbing up on the roof at the age of 85 to make repairs after a hurricane, he was on the move.
He worked as a tool and die maker, machinist, he owned an auto body shop, B's Auto Body, he worked at Poloroid, and he retired from Georgia Pacific at the age of 78. He could fix anything, and he was generous with his skills and time.
He loved animals, and over the years, he owned numerous thoroughbred race horses. He always had biscuits for the neighborhood dogs, and was always available to help out a neighbor.
He was one of ten children born to the late John E. and Ruth E.(Franklin) Bassett of Connecticut. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty Bassett, brothers Richard and Lester, sister Ruth (Schaefer), brothers-in-law Raymond Anderson and Richard Coombs, and grandson Timothy Tighe.
A family celebration of his life will be 12/11/2023 at the Naugle Funeral Home from 11:00 - 12:30 all are invited. Military funeral will be held at Jacksonville National Cemetery at 2:00 PM.
