(May 5, 1953 - March 15, 2020)

William Van Smithey passed away peacefully at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Jacksonville on Sunday, March 15, 2020, surrounded by his loved ones.

Van was a graduate of Jacksonville University (CPA) who worked a number of years with the Auditor General Office. He also served over 12 years combined with the Columbia County and Jacksonville Sheriff's Offices before retiring from law enforcement in 2005. At the time of his death, Van was serving as the Campus Director of Administrative Services for the downtown campus of Florida State College of Jacksonville.

Van was an avid camper, a licensed pilot, and an airplane enthusiast. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and traveling with his wife, Candace, and their pets (Harley and Cooper). Most importantly, he was a follower of Jesus Christ, and the Lord used him to touch many lives. If Van was aware of a need, he was the first to offer help.

Van is survived by his wife and her daughter, Candace (Jacksonville, FL) and Stephany Peters (Atlanta, GA), and his three children: Jim (Brianna), Leah (Michael), and Kyle. He was the proud grandfather of Magnolia, Holden, Rowan, and Bethany. Van is preceded in death by his parents, W.R. Smithey and Ethelind Williams.

Arrangements for a celebration of life service will be made at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests sending memorial donations to World Vision in Van's honor.
